Arblogger purchased by Arby’s, will cease operation

April 1st, 2008

Those roast beef kings just offered me too much money, so, since I was using the initial letters ”Arb” like they were and cutting into their business, I sold out To The Man and that’s all we wrote. (”Arbylogger” sounded silly so they weren’t down wid dat)

See here for more background. . .

“TV Party” by Black Flag: a l’il retrospective

March 31st, 2008

Somewhere I have a vinyl single of “TV Party” by Black Flag. I’ll sell it for a million dollas someday maybe.

         (Don’t forget the allmusic review,

“…Boasting the closest thing to a pop hook that ever appeared on a Black Flag record (though it’s driven more by Chuck Dukowski’s percolating bass line than Ginn’s stun-gun guitar), “TV Party” is tuneful and almost melodic where the band usually served up a man-sized helping of fifth-gear dissonance. And the lyrics (delivered by Rollins in a “aw shucks” yelp while the band shouts the chorus in a gloriously lumpen bellow) are at once cutting and funny, an attack on television-inspired stasis that laughs both at and with it’s subjects (”We’ve got nothin’ better to do/Than watch TV and have a couple of brews!”). …”)

Senate ed funding not snobby enough for Mary Sue

March 29th, 2008

See, e.g., Michigan Daily, Senate OKs 3-percent hike in funding: Bill would grant all state universities equal funding boost for next year,

“The state Senate has passed a bill that would grant each of the state’s 15 universities a 3-percent funding increase, a slight boost from the 1-percent increase the University received last year. …
Last month, University President Mary Sue Coleman addressed the Senate Appropriations Committee with Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon and Wayne State University President Irvin Reid to ask that the three schools be considered separately from the state’s other 12 schools. …
Sen. Liz Brater (D-Ann Arbor), who voted for the funding proposal, said the Senate decided to grant a uniform 3-percent increase because lawmakers had questions about how to calculate some of the incentives Granholm proposed. …
Brater said funding was proposed in one bill rather than two because many of the state’s smaller schools oppose the research corridor’s proposal, claiming it creates a two-tiered education system.
Cheryl Rolland, a spokeswoman for Western Michigan University, said Western supports allocating funds through one bill instead of two because each university makes contributions to the state, and all of them are recovering from budget cuts. …
Last year, the state House of Representatives passed two separate appropriations bills after the Senate passed only one.
The bills went to a conference committee, eventually becoming one bill with two parts that granted separate funding to the research corridor universities. …”

Hm, it looks like my opposition to the two-tier elitist funding system has succeeded, at least partially. (There’s two parts to the bill, unfortunately, but only one bill, thank goodness.)

And I suspect M-Sue should be working on cleaning up her own act re the athletics/academics mess at UM, before she tries to get people to trust her with any more money…

Judge Edmunds kicks Kwame Brewer’s/Kwame Anuzis’ a**

March 27th, 2008

See DetNews, Judge: Access to primary vote list must be equal,

“A federal judge on Wednesday declared part of Michigan’s presidential primary law unconstitutional, agreeing with a group of small political parties that the state cannot give the voter list from the election to the major parties and no one else.
The practical effect of Judge Nancy Edmunds’ ruling is to bar the Secretary of State’s Office from turning over to Michigan’s Democratic and Republican parties a list of which partisan ballot voters selected on Jan. 15. …”

Now Kwame Brewer and Kwame Anuzis, whoops, Mark Brewer and Saul Anuzis, won’t be able to abuse and dominate voter lists like they apparently wanted to…it hurts to get caught and publicly slapped, huh??

Hypostatic union

March 26th, 2008

         Term for the day.

         See le Wik, Hypostatic union,

“Hypostatic union (from the Greek: ὑπόστασις, “hypostasis,” translated reality or person) is a technical term in Christian theology employed in mainstream Christology to describe the presence of both human and divine natures in Jesus Christ. It became official at the Council of Chalcedon, which stated that the two natures (divine and human) are united in the one person (existence or reality, “hypostasis”) of Christ. …”

And how could you live without knowing that.

Worthy whacks the unworthy; or, Kym konks Kwame K’trick

March 24th, 2008

See, e.g., Freep, Kilpatrick and Beatty surrender: Pair are booked after being charged with perjury, conspiracy, misconduct, on the 12 points of whoop-a…, uh, indictment that Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is unleashing on Kwame Kilpatrick and his pal Christine Beatty.

         Mm, mm, mm.

(And don’t forget my old rap song “Kwame Got Fat”, either.)

Dingell wants $0.50 gas tax; who’ll primary this guy?

March 22nd, 2008

John Dingell Jr. wants to slap two more George Washington metal heads on each gallon of octane love you put in your tank. Not to reduce pay to GM execs like his wife $0.50 for each gas guzzler they make, but to charge you halfabuck more for le gasaroo. Less bling bling to ching ching in your wallet cos Ding Ding wants it that way. Well.

…Who can primary this person and get rid of him? cf. this comment at Michigan Liberal on the need for Dingy to disappear, and my own diary there from a few back about primarying General Motors Jr. out of office before he can damage the state and country any more.

And feel free to make suggestions to me, or others, about who could best primary him out of office.

Judge junks suit against Prop 2

March 18th, 2008

See AA News channeling AP, Judge dismisses suit challenging Michigan affirmative action law,

“A federal judge Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit challenging a Michigan law that bans racial and gender preferences in government hiring and public university admissions.
The ruling upholds the constitutionality of a measure approved by Michigan voters in 2006. It had been challenged by groups including the NAACP and the pro-affirmative action group By Any Means Necessary. …”

         Oh well.
I was against Proposal 2, but the suit against it did not ever seem strong to me; when the U of M “Grutter” case says affirmative action is permissible, that’s not the same as its being mandatory.

Somebody better come up with a new way to fight Prop 2-type stuff; maybe ideas will occur on this very blog, stay tuned…
