Greek tragedy of segregation…reversible?

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

I have thought for years, and mentioned to some people, that the fraternities/sororities at UM (and elsewhere) could use some serious desegregation. Especially with the “legacy” thing, where Winston Worthington Whiteguy IV can be a vile and worthless doofus but still get into Phi Grabba Thigh just because daddy (not to mention HIS daddy, etc.) was in it. Good luck finding blacks in some of those fraternities. (And same for sororities, with note that, too, few whites may be in black “Greek” groups, etc.)

So it was nice today to read that the various “Greek” groups on campus are working on desegregation a little. –I hear Martin Luther King was in Alpha Phi Alpha, so maybe fratern/soror/ities are not always so bad after all…..

Daily blogs R.I.P.

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

I have said nice things about the Michigan Daily blogs in the past, but as for now, wha’ppen? (As one of my favorite multiracial ska bands from England, the Beat or English Beat, named an album.)
Even on the hottt “Game” Daily sports blog, the last entry is November 15! So come on mofays.

“Update”: whoops. Actually, several of the blogs have been posting recently; but on the Daily front page, the only blogs showing are the ones from weeks back. There should be an automatic update feature or something, to let people know that there are new Daily blog posts. –So the egg’s not on MY face after all!! –“COME ON MOFAYS!!!!!”

Times: US ignores UK. Big surprise

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

See the London Times, ‘London’s bridge is falling down’,
“…Kendall Myers, a senior State Department analyst, disclosed that for all Britain’s attempts to influence US policy in recent years, “we typically ignore them and take no notice — it’s a sad business”. …” Who knew.

UM wussing out on Prop 2 fight?

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

See yesterday’s AA News, U-M to alter admissions: Race, gender won’t count,

“The University of Michigan will remove consideration of race and gender from undergraduate admissions by the effective date of Proposal 2, the voter-approved ballot question banning some affirmative action programs.
U-M Provost Teresa Sullivan, speaking before the university’s faculty Senate Assembly on Monday, said the changes will be in place if Proposal 2 takes effect Dec. 22 as scheduled.
A pro-affirmative action group, By Any Means Necessary, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging Proposal 2 as unconstitutional. However, legal experts and Proposal 2 supporters have noted that similar challenges in other states have failed….
Although U-M President Mary Sue Coleman initially said U-M might challenge the legality of Proposal 2, or ask for an injunction delaying its implementation for the current admission cycle that is already under way, she and other U-M officials have more recently moderated their remarks on possible legal action.
U-M General Counsel Marvin Krislov…said he couldn’t provide details on U-M’s next steps, ….
Afterwards, Krislov said he couldn’t comment on when - or if - U-M will take legal action. …
On the day after the Proposal 2 vote, Coleman told a crowd on The Diag that she had serious questions as to whether it was lawful as it relates to higher education and said she had directed U-M’s lawyers to immediately begin exploring legal action. She also said U-M would consider asking the courts to allow U-M to use existing methods on its current admissions cycle for next fall’s classes, saying it would be “unfair and wrong” to review applications using two sets of criteria. …”

         So, whassup???

Borat destroys Pammie’s marriage to Kid Rock

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

No, I do not post about “”Pamela Anderson”"-related issues as a rule, but some things are just too much, e.g., PAM SPLITS OVER KID BLOWUP,

“JUST three months after they wed in St. Tropez, Pamela Anderson has filed for divorce from Kid Rock (real name Bob Richie) because of his “male insecurity and major anger issues,” a close pal said.
The final straw was a bellicose blowup Rock threw at Universal Studio chief Ron Meyer’s Beverly Hills house two weeks ago.
“Ron Meyer held a screening of ‘Borat’ at his house for a bunch of people, including Pam and Bob,” says an Anderson pal. “It was the first time Bob had seen the movie, and, well, he didn’t like it.”
The hugely popular film shows Sasha Baron Cohen - in character as Borat Sagdiyev - falling in love with Anderson after seeing her in a “Baywatch” rerun, then driving across America in order to propose marriage to her.
Her friend tells Page Six, “Bob started screaming at Pam, saying she had humiliated herself and telling her, ‘You’re nothing but a whore! You’re a slut! How could you do that movie?’ - in front of everyone. It was very embarrassing. …

“Ever since that night, it has been icicles between them,” the friend relates. “Bob is just a very unhappy and angry man….”"

Nuff said. (But I will mention my relevant Michigan Liberal post “Kid” Bouchard: or, Repubs rock and roll down the sewerpipe.)

MAP takes MSA, LSA, hey

Monday, November 27th, 2006

“Now that people are back from turkey time”: Big surprise! MAP won! (See the Daily on this.)
(Obviously, we have been busy covering some other highly urgent issues lately, but we can now safely report that…)

By way: I forgot, in my previous election analysis to note that MAP could even be creatively borrowing from the MAP “Multidisciplinary Action Project” at the Business School? Or maybe that’s “reaching”. You never know, though… Or maybe they mean their members’ perspectives are scattered all over the “map”. Deep thots. Thank you, Jack Handey.

I defer any comment on the MAP poster “Thou Shall [sic] Vote Michael Moses!!! ~MSA-LSA Representative~”, complete with MM’s face on Charlton Heston’s body from “The Ten Commandments”, it looks like. If I were Michael Moses, I would buy the kind of thick asbestos vest that can stop lightning bolts from Heaven, though.

–Congratulations to all winners, and anyone who lost (for even running). Govern on!

Guns & Poses: Axl visits the D

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

See DetNews, Guns N’ Roses rocks Palace with old hits,

“Few entertainers can get away with the kind of on-stage tardiness that Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose has made his calling card. In fact, so lacking in punctual graces is Rose that when he took the stage at 11:35 p.m. Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills, the more than 7,500 fans gathered at the arena had a good reason to feel lucky: By Rose’s standards, he was early. …
When on-stage, though, he was a monster. Though his voice wavers in and out even in the course of single notes — arguably, Rose’s squawk is about 60 percent shot — he stone-cold nailed a number of songs, offering urgent, essential renditions of “Out Ta Get Me” and “Nightrain.” He hit all his signature stage moves — arms outstretched, shuffling across stage, propelling himself with one leg while balancing with the other; dashing across the stage at full speed and suddenly screeching to a halt, before hitting notes so hard it seemed he was going to burst a blood vessel in his forehead — and he did so with purpose. …
Rose seemed in good spirits Saturday, early on addressing “the good people of Auburn Hills” and later attempting to explain his late arrival time. “For me, this is morning,” Rose said at just after 12:15 a.m., “so consider me your Captain Kangaroo.” …”

(If AR had visited Ann Arbor, the title of this post would’ve been “Welcome to the Jungle”, believe me.)

College Repubs establish whites-only scholarship

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

See, e.g., CNN, Student group offers scholarship for whites only,

“…Boston University College Republicans…told campus publications the $250 Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship was intended as a statement and they had raised funds privately for the award, which does not have the backing of the university.
“We think giving out a scholarship based on any race is crazy,” Joe Mroszczyk, president of the group, told the college’s BU Today Web site.
Boston University Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore said he believed the move was misguided.
“Our goal is to try to increase diversity on the campus, and that usually means diversity from an ethnic and racial standpoint,” Elmore said. “This scholarship does not further that goal.”…”

After MCRI…why am I not surprised?

I’m not saying it should be illegal to have such a fund, but as for context and taste…do we have a White History Month? (Or do we have 12 of them??) –There is, or has been, a NAAWP, by the way, founded by David Duke. So much for decency.

Israel censors Borat posters

Friday, November 24th, 2006

See Reuters, Borat’s racy posters scrapped,

“Forget the anti-Semitic jokes, it’s the racy publicity for the film ‘Borat’ that bothers Israel’s censors.
Posters showing comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s boorish Kazakh alter ego in a skimpy posing pouch were scrapped in the Jewish state on the grounds of decency, the newspaper Haaretz reported Tuesday.
Instead, the star will be shown wearing his trademark suit. …”

Happy Thanksgiving!

Even if you only have popcorn and toast made by your dog.
