“Mary Sue Coleman, you’re no Lee Bollinger”

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Not even meaning it as an insult, maybe, just a fact: see, e.g., DetNews today, Students stage sit-in at U-M president’s office to protest sweatshops,

“…Former U-M President Lee Bollinger established a contractor’s code of conduct following a 51-hour student occupation of the same office, calling for the university to contract only with vendors who meet basic humanitarian principals [sic] in dealing with workers. …”

I think it was less than 10 hours after the occupation today, before the arrests started. What’s going on?

I’m not sure how much sympathy the protesters had from the community, but the early, very early (compared to the laid-back L. Bo, see above) arrests might generate even more sympathy than there’d have been otherwise. We’ll see.

“MS Co.≠L. Bo.” There’s an equation for you, sort of the “E=mc2” of UM administration…

“Hey, my taxpayer dollars pay for this office, so…”

As per the flyer: “Students are occupying the President’s Office!

Students from the Sweatfree Coalition have said, “Enough is enough.” They are sitting-in at President Coleman’s Office and won’t leave until justice is served. For eight years, the University has had a Code of Conduct for licensees, but our apparel is still manufactured in sweatshops. …
…Sweatfree…demands that President Coleman take action today and join over 30 other schools by adopting the Designated Supplier Program (DSP), the only solution on the table that addresses the root of the problem. …
WHAT YOU CAN DO to help end sweatshop abuses:
